Agreement 13655 made this 152nd day of July One thousand eight hundred and ninety Between The undersigned One of the Crown Agents for the Colonies of Downing Street, London, SW in the County of Middlesex acting for and on behalf of the Government of Hong Kong hereinafter called the Government of the one part and Mary Ellen Ward of N.3, Honyatt Road, Gloucester, in the County of Gloucester of the other part.
Whereby it is agreed by and between the parties hereto as follows:
1. The said Mary Ellen Ward (hereinafter called the person engaged) is hereby appointed on probation for a period of three years commencing from the date of arrival in Hong Kong to be Head Mistress of the Government School for Girls in Hong Kong upon terms and conditions hereinafter set forth.
2. The salary to be paid to the person engaged shall be Twelve hundred dollars ($1200) per annum, payable in monthly instalments and quarters will be provided. Full salary will commence from date of arrival in Hong Kong and half salary will be paid during the passage out.
3. A first-class passage to Hong Kong will be provided for the person engaged, but no subsequent passage will be provided unless this Agreement is terminated by the Government at the end of the three years probation, or at an earlier date on account of ill health.
4. The person engaged shall proceed to Hong Kong on a date hereafter to be fixed by the Crown Agents and shall and will on her arrival there faithfully and diligently employ herself in her duties (including) The completion of the organization of the School with the aid of an Assistant and a pupil teacher undermentioned.
